The Inspiration Behind Why We Ink

Picture
Jules lost her brother Owen to Cancer on Oct 13th 2010.  When Owen was a child he had doves as pets and always said they followed him where ever he went.  The night he passed away, there perched outside his window, were 2 white doves; so Jules tattooed a Dove flying on her right shoulder to pay tribute to him.  Jules quickly discovered that there was an entire community of like minded cancer survivors and supporters who got permanent ink to symbolize their battle with the disease or pay tribute to those loved and lost.  As a result Jules wanted to use her expertise in casting to give back to the Cancer community.

It is the unfortunate truth that almost everyone has been touched by cancer in some way. No matter the race, religion, gender, age or social class - cancer does not discriminate and for every person who fights the disease, there is a network of friends and loved ones who battle it with them. Often words are not enough to express what it truly means to experience Cancer and many people have chosen to represent their stories through the permanent statement of a tattoo. This is the motivation behind the Why We Ink Community. It is an online social platform for people to share their tattoos and the beautiful stories behind them. People are invited to submit their stories and photos to be shared on the website. In addition to a gallery of photos and stories, the Why We Ink website will be the home and social hub to foster inspirational and supportive dialogue among the community. The end product of this project will be a beautiful coffee table book made up of a selection of the inspiring stories and photos submitted by people from the community. Proceeds from the book will go to local Cancer charities.
